Do-It-Yourself RV Maintenance

Not all RV maintenance tasks need to be handled by a professional. Consider the following DIY tasks for keeping your RV in great condition.

Read Your Manual

Consult your owner’s manual to see what the manufacturer recommends for your specific make and model. This could save you a lot of time and money by avoiding any damage to your RV. The owner’s manual will serve as your primary resource for everything that needs to be done.

Keep a record of maintenance performed and parts replaced in your manual, too, as this will be helpful whenever you visit a professional mechanic or if you opt to sell your RV down the road.

Regular Inspection

Regularly inspecting your RV will help you spot any potential red flags as soon as possible. It’s much better to catch any problems before they become a bigger hazard when using the RV.
Plus, this prevents the issues from getting worse and causing more damage that might require expensive repairs.

Check the Tires

Make sure the tires are inflated to the proper air pressure. Use a tire pressure gauge when the tires are cold so that the reading is accurate.
While you’re checking the pressure, you’ll also want to look at the sidewalls for cracks and inspect the tread depth to make sure it’s sufficient enough and that there are no objects embedded in your tires. Tread naturally wears down and the tires will eventually need to be replaced.

Miscellaneous Tasks

Finally, be sure to:

  • Check your seals after every trip for cracks or leaks
  • Keep those vents open to prevent mustiness or mold
  • Lubricate those slide-outs to keep them working well and prevent corrosion
  • Run your generator once per month.
